Castle Stalker
Castle Stalker is a well-preserved medieval tower house on a small tidal islet in Loch Linnhe, around halfway between Oban and Glencoe. The history of the castle is rather complicated - in short, it dates back to the 14th century and has changed ownership between clans several times throughout the centuries (from MacDougall to Stewart to Campbell back to Stewart and onto Campbell and back to Stewart once more).
Castle Stalker probably owes its name to the fact that it used to be a popular stopover during hunting and stalking expeditions back in the day.
Today, the castle is privately owned, but guided tours are available throughout the summer season - these are priced at £20 per adult, which is quite steep, but they include the boat transfer.
A nice viewpoint for admiring the castle from a distance is at the back of the Castle Stalker View cafe, where plenty of parking is available. If you want to get closer, you can go down a path through the trees, or walk down along the main road. Free parking should be available at the back of The Old Inn as well. From there, it’s a short walk to the shore.
Castle Stalker has also made an appearance in the famous movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
